Interactive Furby takes Toy of the Year 1998

With not far short of half-a-million of the furry chattering creatures sold in the UK in the run-up to Christmas,Furby from Tiger Electronics became the No.1 best-seller and claimed the British Association of Toy Retailers (BATR) Toy of the Year 1998/99 award at a ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London tonight (Sunday, January 31 1999).

Craze of the Year

TCL - makers of the Pro Yo II and III won the award for Craze of the Year. It was initially through their efforts that the yo-yo craze got started. BATR chairman, David Fogel said: "There was a staggering £30 million worth of yo-yo sales through 1999 in the UK alone, which made an important contribution to the toy trade in a difficult year."

The Entertainer, Wolverhampton (Midlands & Wales)
Marcello's Toymaster, Bournemouth (The South)
Kid's Kingdom, Guernsey (London and Channel Isles)
Banba Toymaster, Dun Loaghaire (Ireland).
The multiple category was won by Woolworths, White Rose Centre, Leeds.
